Launch Your Farming Dream: N.C. Cooperative Extension Announces 2026 Small Farm Boot Camp for New Farmers in the Sandhills and South Central NC Region
Aspiring farmers, market gardeners, and homesteaders in the Sandhills and South Central North Carolina region are invited to take the first critical steps toward success by enrolling in the 2026 South Central Small Farm Boot Camp. This comprehensive program, led by N.C. Cooperative Extension, is specifically designed to provide new and beginning producers with the essential knowledge and skills needed to thrive in local food production. This would also be valuable for small farms looking to expand into new enterprises.
The program is a collaboration among horticulture and agriculture Extension Agents from eight counties—Johnston, Lee, Richmond, Moore, Harnett, Hoke, Scotland, and Montgomery—and leverages the expertise of university specialists and experienced local farmers.
"Whether you’ve just purchased a few acres, want to sell at a local farmers' market, or are within your first couple years of farming and need some focused guidance, the Small Farm Boot Camp is your launchpad," Amanda Bratcher, Horticulture Agent for N.C. Cooperative Extension- Lee County Center, said. "We've built a structured curriculum full of hands-on learning, farm visits, and direct support to help you get off to a successful start."
Small Farm Boot Camp also offers participants the opportunity to build camaraderie with farmers at all stages of their farming journey. There will be opportunities to network with Small Farm Boot Camp and Farm School alumni and established farmers.Core Topics Module: January 17 – February 14, 2026
The core of the program will run for five consecutive Saturdays, from January 17, 2026, to February 14, 2026. Each intensive session will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature a blend of production information, networking, and workshop-style learning. A provided lunch each day will help maximize networking and fellowship among participants.Core Topics Covered:- Introduction to Local Foods

- Introduction to Business Planning

Specialty Topics for Spring and Summer
Following the Core Topics Module, participants can further specialize their knowledge by enrolling in a variety of elective courses offered later in the spring and summer seasons. The fee for each Specialty Topic course is $25.Specialty Topics Available (based on participant interest*):- Plants: Cut Flower Production (Saturday, March 7, 2026), Tree Fruits (June 2026), Small Fruits (July 2026)and Vegetable Production & Season Extension (TBD).
- Animals: Overview of Beef, Pork, or Small Ruminants (TBD), and Poultry Management (TBD).
