We are excited to release our Summer 2021 schedule.

We are still under COVID-19 restrictions but are able to host some face-to-face events for youth ages 5-18. Class sizes are limited. Masks are required indoors and in crowded spaces.

Participants must be registered in 4-H Online. Once registered, our staff will need to approve the registration is complete.

Registration

4-H is a non-formal youth development organization and is open to all youth, Age 5-18 in Rutherford County. All fees are for educational supplies, resources, admission fees, limited insurance, and refreshments. Limited insurance will be provided for all participants. All 4-H participants must be registered in 4-H Online for all waivers and health forms.

Accommodation requests related to a disability should be made at least 2 weeks prior to the class, to Cynthia Robbins at 828-287-6190 or cynthia_robbins@ncsu.edu.

Registration will open on Tuesday, June 1 at 10 a.m. After then, you may register during regular office hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Registration will be taken in person only. No registration will be accepted by telephone. Payment is due at the time of registration. Activities are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Register only one child per form. Refunds will only be made if choice of class is canceled.

Horse Sense – Tuesday-Thursday, June 29–July 1,  9 a.m.–1 p.m.

Come learn the basics of horsemanship. We will cover horse anatomy, breeds and colors, various disciplines, tack, safety, health care, grooming, careers, and more!

Ages: 10-14                                     Cost: $25

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink. Wear closed-toe shoes, towel to sit on for lunch.

*Class will be held at the Isothermal Community College Agribusiness Center on Oakland Road.

 

Electric Fun Wednesday, July 7, 9 a.m.–2 p.m.

Explore different careers with electricity. Rutherford Electric will present their electricity demonstration. We will learn what a lineman does and how he stays safe. We will do several experiments with magnets and circuits. You will learn to make your own circuit board to take home.

Ages: 9-14                                         Cost: $8

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink, towel to sit on outside.

 

This Little Piggy Art Thursday, July 8, 9 a.m.–noon

Come paint your own Little Piggy on a canvas and ceramic pig. You can also paint your own creations on rocks. All materials will be supplied.

Ages: 5-8                               Cost: $15

Wear old clothes.

 

Let’s PaintThursday, July 8, 1–4 p.m.

This Little Piggy came to paint. Create your own prize-winning masterpiece! Youth will also paint a ceramic pig, cow, or sheep. All materials will be supplied.

Ages: 9 and up                                  Cost: $12

Wear old clothes.

 

Gone Fishing– Thursday, July 15, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

We will travel up to the Marion Fish Hatchery to see how fish are raised to stock your favorite fishing streams and ponds. We will enjoy a few hours of fishing in a well-stocked pond. Fishing rods and materials will be supplied.

Ages: 8-14                                         Cost: $8

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink. Wear sunscreen and bring hat or sunglasses and a towel. Masks are required while traveling.

 

Heritage Arts Friday, July 16, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

We will travel into the past to a simpler time. We will make our own piece of hand-built pottery, corn husk dolls, and soap. We will also explore leather working, toys, and more! (Pottery, soap, and leather crafts will need to be picked up at a later date.)

Ages: 7-10                                         Cost: $20

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink, towel to sit on for lunch.

Kids and Chefs – Tuesday-Thursday, July 20–22, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

This hands-on day camp is taught by local chefs and N.C. Cooperative Extension staff with a focus on agriculture and nutrition. Each day of camp features cooking, games, and crafts. Participants will learn about farm production, food selection, cooking techniques, etiquette, and safe food handling. All supplies will be provided. Youth who love to try new foods will love this class! Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Ages: 10-13                                       Cost: $50

What to bring: Wear closed-toe shoes each day.

 

Fairy Gardens – Monday, July 26, 1–4 p.m.

Did you know Fairy Gardens have been around for over 100 years? The tradition has been passed down from one generation to the next. Master Gardener℠ Volunteers Mitsi and Eleanor will show us how to make and decorate our own fairy gardens to take home. All materials will be provided.

Ages: 7-13                                         Cost: $12

Nature Buddies – Tuesday, July 27, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

Come learn about nature, including plants and insects. We will go on a nature walk, play insect games, plant a mini-greenhouse, study habitats, life cycles, and more!

Ages: 5-8                                          Cost: $6

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink, towel to sit on outside.

 

Farm Friends – Monday, August 2, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

Come learn about farming. We will travel to Colfax Creek Farm in Ellenboro to learn about raising poultry, cattle, and swine. You’ll see how life is on the farm.

Ages: 7-10                                       Cost: $6

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink, towel to sit on outside. Wear closed-toe shoes. Youth under 8 years of age will need a booster seat. Masks are required while riding on the van.

 

Wild About Wildlife – Monday, August 9, 9 a.m.–2 p.m.

Learn about Skins and Skulls, animal tracks, and careers with wildlife. We will learn about hunters’ safety and habitats for wild animals. We will make animal tracks and a birdfeeder to take home.

Ages: 9-13                                       Cost: $8

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink, towel to sit on outside. Empty 2-liter soda bottle.

 

Wildlife Buddies – Tuesday, August 10, 9 a.m.–2 p.m.

Come learn about nature, plants, and animals. We will go on a nature walk, play wildlife games, study habitats, life cycles, the food chain, and more! We will make animal tracks. We will also make a bird feeder for you to take home and enjoy!

Ages: 5-8                                          Cost: $10

What to bring: Bagged lunch and drink. Towel to sit on outside.

 

Expressive Arts– Wednesday, August 11, 9 a.m.–2 p.m.

Let’s open our minds to creativity! We will have fun tie-dying, painting, drawing, and more. We will explore a variety of art media including paint, foil, duct tape, and more!

Ages: 7-12                                       Cost: $15

What to bring: One or two pre-washed (white) items to tie-dye. Bagged lunch and drink.
